Impossible

Impossible

[Mar 9:23-24 NASB95] 23 And Jesus said to him, ” ‘If You can?’ All things are possible to him who believes.” 24 Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, “I do believe; help my unbelief.”

Many people accept impossibilities in their life. The last several years have been so rough that we have a hard time dreaming and believing for something other than what is happening around us.

  • Mark 9 (also Matthew 17 and Luke 9) tells the story of a man who had a child that was affected by a demon from birth.

What does it mean to believe for impossible things?

God wants us to learn how to believe for the impossible.

  1. What things are possible?
    1. Terrible things.
      1. [Mar 9:20, 22 NASB95] 20 They brought the boy to Him. When he saw Him, immediately the spirit threw him into a convulsion, and falling to the ground, he [began] rolling around and foaming [at the mouth.] … 22 “It has often thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!”
    2. Things others cannot fix.
      1. [Mar 9:18 NASB95] 18 and whenever it seizes him, it slams him [to the ground] and he foams [at the mouth,] and grinds his teeth and stiffens out. I told Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not [do it.]”
      2. [Mat 17:16 NASB95] 16 “I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not cure him.”
    3. Things that are demonic.
      1. [Mar 9:17, 20, 25 NASB95] 17 And one of the crowd answered Him, “Teacher, I brought You my son, possessed with a spirit which makes him mute; … 20 They brought the boy to Him. When he saw Him, immediately the spirit threw him into a convulsion, and falling to the ground, he [began] rolling around and foaming [at the mouth.] … 25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and do not enter him again.”
      2. [Mat 17:18 NASB95] 18 And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured at once.
    4. Things that have been around forever.
      1. [Mar 9:21 NASB95] 21 And He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood.
  2. How are all things possible?
    1. Grow your faith.
      1. [Mat 17:20 NASB95] 20 And He said to them, “Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.
      2. [Mar 9:23 NASB95] 23 And Jesus said to him, ” ‘If You can?’ All things are possible to him who believes.”
      3. One commenter refuses to believe the issue is faith in this passage. Yet, I believe, notwithstanding the father’s faith struggle, this passage is about faith.
      4. Faith is an issue when it comes to receiving from God. It is not the only issue. Also, note that only Jesus can diagnose the faith level of others. Faith should never be a point of condemnation.
    2. Pray (fast).
      1. [Mar 9:29 NASB95] 29 And He said to them, “This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer.”
      2. [Mat 17:21 NASB95] 21 [“But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”]
    3. Speak to the thing.
      1. [Mat 17:20 NASB95] 20 And He said to them, “Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.
    4. Believe for impossible things.
      1. [Mar 9:23 NASB95] 23 And Jesus said to him, ” ‘If You can?’ All things are possible to him who believes.”
      2. Never again.
        1. [Mar 9:25 NASB95] 25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and do not enter him again.”
      3. Never quit.
        1. [Mar 9:26 NASB95] 26 After crying out and throwing him into terrible convulsions, it came out; and [the boy] became so much like a corpse that most [of them] said, “He is dead!”
        2. “from that hour” = ἀπὸ τῆς ὥρας ἐκείνης – [Mat 17:18 NASB95] 18 And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured at once.

Dare to believe for the impossible.

Children’s Ministry & Parent Resources

July’s sermon series for children:
A 5-WEEK SERIES FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT ON ELISHA

SERIES OVERVIEW:

We learn about so many incredible humans — past and present — who have changed the world using their influence, their voice, their dreams, and their passion. Kids might find it hard to relate to these dreamers, though, and ask themselves, “Can God use me for something that grand?” In Up In The Air, kids will learn through the stories of Elisha that we can dream big with God, have faith in God, count on God’s promises, ask God for what we need, and be used by God. The sky isn’t the limit anymore . . . not with God’s promises at work in our lives!

ENC is equipping parents to raise healthy, Spirit-empowered children.

Visit our website link below for resources that provide a guide for parents to discuss throughout the week what is being taught during church services. Also, there are parenting tips and tools that will give you what you need to enhance your parenting skills.

At ENC, your family matters. We are giving you the tools that, with the power of the Holy Spirit, will help you raise your children.
