What have you become?
The Holy Spirit is working to make us become like Jesus.
In Galatians 5:22-23, the Holy Spirit inspired the Apostle Paul to describe the result of the transforming process in a Christian’s life. These are listed as “fruit” of the Spirit. Notice it is singular. There are many opinions on why it is “fruit” and not “fruits.” I believe this passage explains what the result will be when we walk by the Spirit (v.16).
The Problem With Fruit.
Is Paul saying these “fruit” happen automatically? Or does a believer have to choose to allow them to operate in their life? An apple tree produces apples because it is an apple tree. It is automatic.
This is where the “fruit” word confuses. Paul tells the Galatian Christians that they must choose to walk in the Spirit, and this “fruit” will be their choice. Again, it is the divine/human partnership.
The Holy Spirit provides the “fruit.” I have to choose “fruit” over the flesh. By choosing to walk by the Spirit, we then become the person God has called us to become.
We will unpack this empowering experience as part of the “Receive The Holy Spirit” sermon series.
