“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded [permission] to sift you like wheat; but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” Luke 21:31-32 NASB
Satan Is After Your Faith
Superman had a weakness: kryptonite. In order to be stripped of his powers all an enemy had to do was produce a certain amount of kryptonite and Superman was rendered powerless and then he can be easily defeated. Kryptonite was the real enemy of Superman.
Let me draw a picture of how this relates to us. Our faith is powerful. So powerful that John says our faith can overcome the world (I John 5:4). Yet, unbelief can sink us (Mark 4:38-40). So unbelief is our kryptonite. If our enemy can cause us to slip into unbelief we lose our faith and therefore we are easily defeated.
What is Satan after when he attacks us? He is after our faith. He wants us to disconnect from the promises of God by losing our faith.
We often misinterpret the real purpose of the attack. This causes us to fight for the wrong things in the wrong ways. Due to our ignorance of the purpose of the attack, we forget to protect the most precious and powerful thing we have: our faith.
To be clear: The purpose of every attack is to get us out of faith and in unbelief. Thayers Greek Lexicon says this about this verse (Luke 21:31-32 see above), “Satan [is] asking that the apostles be taken out of the power and keeping of God to be tried by afflictions (allusion being made to Job 1:1-12).” In verse 32, Jesus prays for Peter’s faith not to fail.
Why? Peter’s faith could keep through the attack of Satan. Peter’s faith was worth protecting. So is yours.
This Sunday we will further unpack the importance of your faith to Satan and why it should be important to you to keep your faith strong.
We love you. We are looking forward to seeing you at Evangel North Church Sunday 9 AM & 11 AM, and Wednesday at 7 PM.
