Truth in a Changing World
In an age where moral relativism is celebrated, and society drifts further from the foundation of absolute truth, we must ask: what remains unshakable? The headline of today’s world might read, “Religion is gaining ground, but morality is losing ground.” People acknowledge God, yet reject His ways, crafting their own rules, echoing the postmodern declaration that truth is subjective. But as believers, we know that God has spoken audibly and given us a foundation that does not shift with the culture—the Ten Commandments.
The Ten Commandments, or the “Ten Words,” are more than ancient laws; they are divine principles that have shaped civilizations and continue to provide wisdom for life today. Their relevance transcends time and culture, speaking to every generation. As we examine these divine truths, we must understand three key aspects of the Ten Commandments that highlight their power and importance in our lives.
1. The Ten Come from God
They Have Divine Authority
The authority of the Ten Commandments comes directly from God Himself. In Exodus 20:1-2, we read, “Then God spoke all these words, saying, ‘I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.’” These are not human constructs or philosophical suggestions; they are divine directives from the Creator of the universe.
Because they come from God, they carry an unquestionable authority that demands our obedience. As the Westminster Shorter Catechism states, “Because God is the Lord, and our God, and Redeemer, therefore we are bound to keep all of His commandments.” Jesus Himself affirmed this when He said in John 14:6, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”
Obedience to God’s commands is not an option; it is the natural response of a heart that acknowledges His sovereignty. His authority remains unchanged, whether humanity accepts it or not.
They Are Good
Some might see God’s commandments as restrictive, but Scripture declares them as good. Romans 7:12 states, “So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.” The commandments reflect the very nature of God—His holiness, justice, and love.
Philosophers have debated the origin of moral goodness. Plato asked, “Does God command the law because the law is good, or is the law good because God commands it?” The biblical answer is both—the law is good because it comes from God, and God only commands what is good. The Ten Commandments are not burdensome but are life-giving, designed for our flourishing.
2. The Ten Are Timeless
They Speak to Every Generation
Many today argue that the Ten Commandments are outdated, but Scripture reveals that divine law transcends time. Psalm 11:3 asks, “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” When societies abandon God’s truth, moral decay follows. This is not a new problem. Judges 21:25 describes ancient Israel’s moral collapse: “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” We see the same moral confusion today, but God’s Word remains our unchanging guide.
The Ten Commandments call every generation back to God’s standard. In a culture that celebrates moral autonomy, we need the clarity of divine instruction more than ever.
They Apply to Every Christian
Some may ask whether the Ten Commandments still apply under the New Covenant. The answer is a resounding yes. While the ceremonial and civil laws of Israel were fulfilled in Christ, the moral law remains binding. Romans 3:31 states, “Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law.” Likewise, 1 Corinthians 9:21 affirms that believers are under “the law of Christ.”
Jesus did not abolish the commandments; He fulfilled them (Matthew 5:17-19). He clarified and deepened their meaning, showing that true obedience comes from the heart. The Ten Commandments remain relevant because they reflect God’s moral character, which does not change.
3. The Ten Point Us to Christ
They Reveal What God Expects from Us
Jesus made it clear: “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15). Obedience to God’s commands is a sign of our love for Him. The commandments reveal His holy standard and call us to live in a way that honors Him.
They Show Our Need for Christ
No one can perfectly keep the Ten Commandments. Romans 3:20 declares, “By the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.” The law exposes our sin and reveals our need for a Savior. Without Christ, we fall short. Romans 7:7-11 explains that the law convicts us, leading us to repentance.
When we measure ourselves against God’s perfect standard, we recognize our insufficiency. This drives us to the cross, where we find grace and mercy through Jesus Christ.
They Point to Christ’s Redemptive Work
The law does not save us—Christ does. Romans 8:1 declares, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Through His sacrifice, we are freed from the condemnation of the law. Romans 5:20-21 adds, “Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.” The commandments show us our need, but Jesus provides our salvation.
Living by God’s Truth
In a world of shifting values and moral confusion, we must anchor ourselves in God’s unchanging Word. The Ten Commandments remind us that God is our authority, that His moral law is timeless, and that we need Christ to fulfill His righteous standard.
As believers, we are called to surrender to God’s authority, trusting in His grace and mercy. While we cannot keep the law perfectly, we follow Christ, who has fulfilled it on our behalf. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can walk in obedience, not out of obligation, but out of love for the One who first loved us.
Let us hold fast to these timeless truths, living as lights in a dark world, and proclaiming the goodness of our God to every generation. Amen.
