ROOTED: The Encounter
“Then Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak.” Genesis 32:24 NASB
Alone?
Was he alone or not alone? Follow me, here. If he was alone was he wrestling the air? If someone was there to wrestle, then he was not alone. How can he be alone, yet there was someone there to wrestle?
The previous verses give the answer. Jacob just sent away his people and his possessions. Everything and everyone was gone.
Wrestling With God?
Jacob was wrestling with a man. This was more than a man. Jacob called him God (v. 30). Hosea said that he struggled with “God” and “the Angel” (Hosea 12:3-4). Some theologians teach that it was a theophany (God manifesting as a human) or a Christophany (a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ).
This wrestling match began a true conversion of Jacob. Jacob had previous run-ins with God. Those were beneficial but this one was different. It was this encounter that brought a change in his name and his walk. He began to ROOT in God at this point.
We are going to explore this pericope on Sunday to help us find out the importance of a direct encounter with God in the ROOTING process. God wants us to encounter Him. The more we encounter Him, the deeper the ROOTS go.
Sunday, we will continue the “ROOTED: Grow deep; live strong” series. Whether a person is a new Christian or a seasoned saint this series will help us stay well-rooted. We are going to learn about what to do as we grow in Him.
We love you. Looking forward to seeing you at Evangel North Church Sunday 9 AM & 11 AM, and Wednesday 7 PM.
