My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
Because you have rejected knowledge,
I also will reject you from being My priest.
Since you have forgotten the law of your God,
I also will forget your children.
Hosea 4:6 NASB
Let’s Not Get Destroyed
In this verse, God’s people were getting decimated. The judgment that Hosea was describing is breathtaking. Eerdman’s commentary on this verse says, “Devastation is threatened, more complete than that at the Flood (Genesis 8–9), for not only land but sea and sky, too, will be denuded of life in a total reversal of creation. The contrast with the joy in God’s creation of Ps 24:1 is chilling.”
In verse six, we get a description of one of the elements that brought about the destruction. God says that the people of God have rejected “knowledge.” Eerdman points out that they were still sacrificing, but they were intentionally not teaching God’s law! Although they had the opportunity, they were willfully ignoring God’s truth that was coming from the prophets and the written Word. The result of ignoring God’s Word was that ungodly thought patterns and practices were spreading in the people of God. It was affecting the priests and the people. They did not know God or His Word.
The same is true today. When Christians refuse to give heed to and grow in the knowledge of God and His Word, destruction comes. God is calling us to grow in our knowledge of Him. He wants us to be protected and prosperous. Our growing knowledge of Him connects us to His Presence and promises and gives us protection and peace.
This Sunday, Graduation Sunday, as we honor people who have graduated from some level of education, we will unpack this concept further.
