ACTS Series Continues: How To Die For Christ
[Act 6:8-10 NASB95] 8 And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people. 9 But some men from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen, [including] both Cyrenians and Alexandrians, and some from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and argued with Stephen. 10 But they were unable to cope with the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking.
[Act 7:58-60 NASB95] 58 When they had driven him out of the city, they [began] stoning [him;] and the witnesses laid aside their robes at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 They went on stoning Stephen as he called on [the Lord] and said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!” 60 Then falling on his knees, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them!” Having said this, he fell asleep.
When we learn how to die for Christ, we learn how to live for Christ.
This statement might be shocking at first. God has called us to die for him. Many today are being martyred for faith even today. We need to pray for the persecuted church worldwide.
God certainly wants to give you abundant life. Access to that abundant life starts with giving up our lives for Christ. Paul said, “I die daily.” (I Cor. 15:31) Jesus said we are “lose our lives,” and we will find it. (Matt 10:39; 16:25)
In Acts 6 and 7, we read about the second martyr of the Church (Jesus is the first martyr.) His story is powerful. His story is touching. The story of his martyrdom teaches us how to live for Christ.
This Sunday, we are going to unpack this story. I believe it will encourage you to live for Christ. It will challenge you to go deeper in your relationship with God. It will show us how to deal with life.
