September Sermon Series:
Infin8 – 8 Faith-Building Stories of the Bible
“And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets, who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies. Women received back their dead, raised to life again. There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection. Some faced jeers and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were put to death by stoning; they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated– the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves and in holes in the ground. These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.” Hebrews 11:32-40 NIV
Tell Me A Story
Hebrews 11 is the great faith chapter. The Holy Spirit inspired writer is describing what “faith is” in this chapter. Understanding faith has a paradox to it. It is simple, yet complex. Mere didactic paradigms fall coldly to the ground while simple child-like stories fan the fires of faith.
That is what we see in this chapter. Snippets of stories. Stories that describe how people walked by faith. These stories humble those of Disney and Marvel (I am looking at you, Avengers!). These stories will hold your attention, bring tears to your eyes, set you dancing around the room, and drive you to prayer seeking the Presence of God. These stories will set a doctrinal foundation. They will remove fear and give joy. They will provide an iron-clad action plan.
Like the Hebrews writer said, “I do not have time to tell . . .” all the stories, but in the month of September, we going to look at the 8 stories of the Bible. They will help us define faith. They will inspire us. They will help us to live by faith.
I am looking forward to experiencing these stories with you.
We love you. Looking forward to seeing you at Evangel North Church Sunday 9 AM & 11 AM, and Wednesday 7 PM.
Also new service: Saturdays 6PM, at Evangel World Prayer Center (6900 Billtown Road).
